I need to work through better ways of classifying and characterizing American indigenous peoples and geographic areas. The U.S. Census approach, which represents the most comprehensive single source of data, is important in its way as it focuses on identifying geographic areas where indigenous people live so they can be counted. The geospatial boundary part of these data end up identifying explicit areas like reservations and community boundaries, and a deeper look into the Tribal subdivisions is also warranted. These do also identify trust areas granted under treaties that we also need to understand. But we ultimately need to blend together other sources of data and a representation of both the human social organizations of Tribes as well as the spatiotemporal areas now and perhaps historically associated with Tribes.
